The beach

Now most people have seen the film but NOT read the book, I haven't seen the film but HAVE read the book. This is one of my favourite books, a cult classic about a bunch of travellers who end up on a forbidden island off the coast of Thailand. Not wanting to be found they live a new life in secrecy hidden away deep in a jungle clearing. It's really a story about globalism and commercialism, about the dream of living totally self sufficient, in a paradise away from government, taxes, law, jobs (something that sounds quite appealing in todays modern world). This book has really inspired me to go travelling, I know alot of people who travel regularly around the middle east, and I could never see the attraction until I read this book.
